Choosing a course of Study
College education is very important but more important is your major or course of study. It will be a waste of time and effort pursuing a course and in the end you discover that it is not for you. No one should pick a course for financial benefit alone or because of social status, peer pressure, societal pressure, family and parental pressure and the most dangerous of all, choosing a course of study due to CONFUSION. The Bible says that God is not the author of confusion and when you become confused about your course of study in school please pray and ask God for guidance. Seek wisdom from mentors, counselors in and out of schools. Below are some things you can do when you are at a cross road in the area of choosing a college course of study:

Assessment: Make an assessment of yourself, what you are good at and what you find pleasure in doing when it involves education. I wanted to be a lawyer and I loved everything that has a courtroom session in it and everything that dealt with law (still do). I read novels from authors such as John Grisham; I watched courtroom dramas on TV and many more. I am not a lawyer today because there are times in life that you must change course due to circumstances that may or may not be under your control and if given another chance or opportunity, I will pursue law. I spoke to a youth some time ago who has siblings that are brilliant and are going to medical school and science schools. She also is very brilliant and I asked her, if she was going to medical school she replied “no” and when I asked her why and what she will be going to college for, she answered and said she doesn’t like the site of blood and she loves kids so she wants to be a teacher. I know teachers don’t make a lot of money but the dedicated ones among them will teach the doctors, lawyers, engineers so on and so fort.
Pray: While assessing yourself pray. Ask God for wisdom, pray for spirit of discernment to be able to know what it is you want to study in school and ask God to lead you, the Bible says “Commit your plans to the Lord and he will direct your path” Acknowledge Him in your plan to go to school and pursue an education path.
List Majors & Minors: You must have a list of major and minor degree programs that are available and do a research on them to know where you will gain employment if you embark on a particular program
Be practical: You should speak to those that have gone before you to find out their experiences in different areas of study. And also speak to those that are already working in the areas you are interested in. Speak to a doctor, lawyer, teacher, computer engineer, managers, customer service reps etc to find out what their job is like to see if you can cope in these environments such as theirs.
